For those who enjoy sewing, a new baby is an opportunity to provide the parents with items that they will need for a short time and treasure forever. With handmade baby clothes, you can show off expert techniques without committing to a large sewing project. Making clothing for newborns requires having the special needs of newborns in mind. Newborn skin is very sensitive, so all items that touch a baby's skin need to be extra gentle.
Things You'll Need
Sewing pattern
Fabric
Color-free, fragrance-free laundry products
Sewing notions (as required by pattern)
Choose patterns for tops or dresses that close in the front with snaps, or short ties at the middle of the torso. Some babies don't like having clothing pulled over their heads.
Check the sewing pattern's sizing requirements. Most patterns for infants have a size suitable for newborns starting from about 6 lbs. If the smallest size weight limit is less than 8 lbs., consider making some items in both the smallest size and the next size up.
Launder the fabric according to manufacturer's directions, using the color-free, fragrance-free laundry products. Do not use bleach.
Sew the pieces using French seams, or serge using a flatlock stitch. These seams will protect delicate skin from raw edges.
