Things You'll Need
Decide what type of zipper would look the best on your bag. It doesn't necessarily have to be functional to be decorative. The heavier the zipper, the higher the amount of metal that is used in the teeth and the tab, lending an industrial look to the bag.
Determine the exact zipper length you wish to use. Using a sewing machine, create a zigzag stitch across the end of the zipper to end the track. Cut off the excess.
Stitch the zipper into place on the bag with the use of the sewing machine. If you have selected a more industrial zipper, use heavy-duty thread, such as that used to create denim jeans and jackets. If the zipper is more delicate, use a lurex thread to sew it to the bag.
If the bag's fabric is too heavy to allow a sewing machine to attach the zipper properly, consider using a fabric hook-and-loop fastener to secure the zipper. Fabric hook-and-loop fasteners often feature adhesive backing on both sides of the tape and can be used to fasten the back of the zipper to the fabric with ease.
Use fabric glue to attach the zipper onto a handbag or tote. Follow the instructions on the package to adhere the zipper to the bag.
Embellish the zipper with a glued-on length of decorative fabric tape on either side of the zipper. Add lace or sequins. Use fabric glue for the best adhesion.
