Things You'll Need
Cotton fabric (any color)
Fabric scissors
Iron (optional)
Leather string or ribbon
Pins
Safety pin (if using ribbon)
Sewing machine
Thread
Step 1: Cut the Fabric
Cut the fabric to 28 inches by 15 inches. Then fold it in half to give you a piece of fabric that's 19 inches by 15 inches.
Step 2: Pin the Sides Together
Pin the two sides together leaving a 1/2-inch allowance for the seam. If your fabric has a pattern, make sure the pattern’s correct sides are facing each other.
Tip
Some sewing machines have measurements in the needle area that can help guide you when you sew.
Step 3: Fold and Pin the Opening
Fold the fabric down 1 inch from the opening and pin it. This casing will hold your leather drawstring.
Tip
You can iron the casing, if necessary, to make it easier to sew.
Step 4: Sew the Sides Together
Sew the two sides of your fabric pieces together along the 1/2-inch seam allowance. Remove the pins after sewing. Next, cut any excess string with scissors or with your sewing machine's thread cutter.
Step 5: Sew the Opening
Sew the opening of your hem that will hold the leather drawstring. Remove the pins.
Step 6: Turn the Fabric Inside Out
Turn your fabric inside out, making sure to get the corners with your fingers. You can iron the bag, if necessary.
Step 7: Insert the Leather String
Take the leather string and push it through one side of the casing until it comes out the other end. After your leather string is completely through, pull the ends together and cut them so they are even. Tie a knot to secure the string into place.
Tip
Leather string is sturdy enough to run through without a safety pin. If you use ribbon, a safety pin will be necessary to push it through.
Throw this into your luggage and you’ll have one less thing to sort through!
